Klein Hornig Partner Presents on Harvard Panel

On Monday, January 30, 2017, Boston partner, Henry Korman, presented on a panel sponsored by the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government Joint Center on Housing entitled, “On the Home Front: A Panel Discussion on State and Local Housing Policies in the Trump Era.” Other presenters included Joseph A. Curtatone, Mayor of the City of Somerville, MA and Chrystal Kornegay, Undersecretary of the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development. The panel focused on how state and local officials as well as housing activists, are preparing for changes in housing and housing-related policies that are likely to occur under the Trump Administration.

Klein Hornig Attorney Presents on BBA Panel

On November 28, 2016, Boston Senior Counsel, Kate McGarr, presented on a panel at the Boston Bar Association entitled, “Title Insurance Policies: A Primer.” The panel focused on the basics of title insurance, including the purpose of title insurance, the differences between a title insurance commitment and pro forma policy, the particular sections of a commitment and policy, the risks covered by a title insurance policy and the exclusions from coverage.

2016 Klein Hornig Family Retreat

From September 23rd-25th, Klein Hornig employees and their families traveled to Williamsburg, Virginia for a weekend of family-fun at the Kingsmill Resort.

The Family Retreat is a KH tradition rooted in our commitment to functioning as one firm (despite two offices) and as one family. The weekend was a huge success!

Klein Hornig Attorneys Present at 4th Annual Housing Credit Conference

On Wednesday, September 21st, Klein Hornig attorneys, Erik Hoffman and Henry Korman presented on two separate panels at the Virginia Housing Alliance 4th Annual Housing Credit Conference in Richmond, VA.

DC partner, Erik Hoffman participated on two panels entitled, “Pitfalls and Potential of 9-4 Twinning to Stretch Limited Resources” and “Seller Take Back Bonds for Tax Adverse Sellers.” The panels focused on 9-4 Twinned projects – two projects on the same or adjacent site that may share some facilities, but are financed separately and on structuring a sale with a seller take back loan that uses tax exempt bond financing and qualifies the project for 4% credits.

Boston partner, Henry Korman presented on the panel entitled, “Implementation of the National Housing Trust Fund.” This panel focused on the impact of the National Housing Trust fund and the process, timeline and purpose of the new federal funding to be deployed in Virginia.

Klein Hornig Attends Dorchester Brewing Company Ribbon-Cutting

On Wednesday, July 20th, Boston attorneys, Jacob Taylor and Wat Matsuyasu attended the ribbon-cutting event for Dorchester Brewing Company (DBC), founded by Klein Hornig friend, Travis Lee and his partners. Klein Hornig assisted with the entity formation, site acquisition and various zoning matters.

While not an affordable housing project, this project is truly a neighborhood economic development project as DBC has repositioned a formerly blighted building bringing economic vitality to that portion of Mass Ave, is employing more than 50% Dorchester residents (75% Boston residents) and is committed to serving as a venue for neighborhood events.

Klein Hornig Participates in 2016 Boston Corporate Challenge

For the 4th consecutive year members of Klein Hornig participated in the 2016 J.P Morgan Corporate Challenge. The 3.5-mile race started and ended at the Boston Common and featured 9,475 runners from 324 companies.

Klein Hornig associate, Ross Pini was the first KHer to cross the finish line followed by Dan Rosen, Becca Melaas and Brenna Chaplain.

This year the challenge raised money for City Year Boston, an organization that works to teach young leaders to serve as tutors, mentors and role models to students in the Boston area.

Klein Hornig Attorneys Present at 2016 ABA Forum

From May 25-27, 2016, Klein Hornig attorneys attended the 25th Annual ABA Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development Law in Washington DC.

Boston partner Henry Korman participated on a panel held at HUD Headquarters May 25th entitled, “HUD 1 – Fair Housing Review of RAD,” which focused on relocation and fair housing issues such as siting and tenant selection in HUD’s Rental Assistance Demonstration program.

Fellow Boston partner, Teresa Santalucia presented on “Tax-Exempt Issues for Non-Profit Entities,” which explored issues related to tax-exempt entities, exempt purpose and maintenance of exemption. Her presentation focused on private benefit and private inurement issues and how to spot them.

Dan Rosen, who also serves as a member of the Forum’s Governing Committee, spoke on a “Preservation Outside the Box” panel, where he and other panelists discussed novel and unusual strategies to accomplish the preservation of affordable housing.

Rounding out the list of KH panelists, DC attorney Eric Herrmann was part of a, “HUD Multi-Family Programs” update presentation, where he joined senior HUD staff and other practitioners, with a focus on transferring Section 8 housing assistance using Section 8(bb) of the United States Housing Act.

Klein Hornig Attorneys Present at BBA Charitable Board Service Workshop

On Thursday, April 28th, Boston associate Andrew Gilmore presented to approximately 100 members of the Boston Bar Association. Andrew’s presentation focused on the legal duties and responsibilities of board members as they serve their community through participation on the board of directors of charitable organizations. Andrew and two other panelists focused on specific charitable board topics, including the legal duties of nonprofit board members, important legal documents, board financial review and state and federal compliance issues.

Klein Hornig Attorney Presents Nonprofit Legal Seminar

On Thursday, February 25th, Boston partner, Teresa Santalucia led a presentation entitled, “Lobbying, Advocacy & Political Activities for 501(c)(3) Entities in an Election Year.” Teresa’s presentation gave a general overview of basic federal tax law for 501(c)(3) organizations. Teresa also focused on the differences between advocacy and lobbying as utilized by nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations.

The presentation lasted approximately two hours and was a joint project of the Lawyers Clearinghouse and Boston Community Investment Series. This presentation will be repeated in Framingham on April 13, 2016 and in Lawrence in May 2016 (date TBD).
