Steve Paul has more than 35 years of experience providing tax and business advice representing developers, syndicators and investors using federal and state tax credits and other incentives for the development of affordable housing, preservation of historic buildings and financing various other projects in low-income communities. Klein Hornig Attorney Featured as Emerging Leader

Klein Hornig is pleased to announce that Washington DC associate, Lauren Buckner was featured in the Emerging Leader Spotlight sponsored by the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers (“HAND”).

For over 20 years, HAND has educated and trained members to support development of viable housing for individuals of all incomes. HAND is designed to engage and involve its members allowing them to effectively make a positive impact on both their career and surrounding community.

Lauren has been active with HAND since 2014, which has enabled her to network with not only experienced industry leaders, but emerging leaders as well. Lauren is also a member of the “HAND Brain Trust Committee” allowing her to participate in HAND’s new initiative, “Generation HAND”, which further develops emerging leaders in the affordable housing industry. Klein Hornig Attorneys Chair NH&RA Panels

On February 18th – 21st, Klein Hornig attorneys, Chris Hornig and Dan Rosen chaired two separate panels at the National Housing and Rehabilitation Association’s 2015 Annual Meeting involving more than 200 developers, syndicators, lenders, and other members of the affordable housing community. The various panels focused on multiple issues and challenges facing the affordable housing community today. The three-day meeting was preceded by a one-day “Public Housing Joint Venture Symposium,” which specifically focused on RAD, HOPE VI, CNI, and HUD’s proposed rule on demolition and disposition of public housing projects.

Washington, DC partner, Chris Hornig chaired a panel at the Joint Venture Symposium which looked at the revitalization and recapitalization of HOPE VI properties as they reached the year 15 watershed. Chris specifically discussed the challenges arising from operating subsidy cutbacks and the potential for restructuring though “transformation” remedies or RAD conversion.

At the Annual meeting, Boston partner, Dan Rosen shared his insights providing various information regarding new policies, regulations, and news at HUD. Dan focused his presentation on RAD, Section 8 Porting, and Project-Based Vouchers.

Andrew Gilmore Presents at 4th Annual BBA Charitable Board Service Program

On Thursday, January 22nd, Boston associate Andrew Gilmore presented to approximately 60 members of the Boston Bar Association. Andrew’s presentation focused on the legal duties and responsibilities of board members as they serve their community through participation on the board of directors of charitable organizations. The program was relevant for those who have limited experience serving on charitable boards, but would like to serve in the future. Andrew along with five other presenters focused on specific charitable board topics, including how to find board membership opportunities, board review of pertinent financial documentation, and current compliance issue.

Klein Hornig Mom Wins Prestigious Award

We would like to send hearty congratulations to Teresa Santalucia who was recently named a Super Lawyer by her almost 9 year old son Mateo. Mateo spent several pro-bono hours sifting through numerous resumes, but in the end Teresa took the prize.

The Community Builders Honored at Novogradac Tax Credit Conference

Klein Hornig congratulates The Community Builders, Inc. (“TCB”) on receiving a 2014 Development of Distinction Award presented by The Novogradac Journal of Tax Credits. TCB was recognized in the “LIHTC Development that Best Demonstrates Financial Innovation” category for their work on Charlesview Residences, a 240-unit mixed-income residential project located in Brighton, Massachusetts.

The Novogradac Journal of Tax Credits, awards ten winners for their exceptional achievement in the development of properties using low-income housing tax credits (“LIHTC”) as well as tax credits utilizing HUD financing. The winning properties along with their development teams, were honored at the Novogradac Tax Credit Developers Conference, in January 2015.


Dan Kolodner Contributes to Strafford Webinar

Boston Partner, Dan Kolodner was one of three presenters participating in a live webinar on Wednesday, December 10th entitled “Mixed-Use and Economic Development: Financing Structures and Options.” This webinar gave a brief overview on the various financing tools, sources of money, and legal challenges for mixed-use and real estate development projects in the current economic environment. The presenters focused on construction loans, preferred equity, mezzanine loans, tax credit funds, tax increment financing and EB-5 financing.

The presentation was followed by a live question and answer session with participants to address individual questions directly. Teresa Santalucia Gives Cultural Inclusion Training

On Tuesday, December 9, 2014, Boston Senior Counsel, Teresa Santalucia presented to approximately 40 people on the roles and responsibilities of nonprofit board governance. The presentation is part of a larger project working to train potential new members of the governing bodies of nonprofit organizations.

Teresa Santalucia Presents to Affordable Housing Community

Klein Hornig Senior Counsel, Teresa Santalucia, led a presentation Wednesday, November 19th entitled “Where is the Line? Board Duties and Management Responsibilities.” The presentation focused on corporate governance and the different respective duties and responsibilities of a nonprofit board and nonprofit management.

Dan Rosen Leads CNI Presentation

On Thursday, November 6th, Boston Partner Dan Rosen spoke to members of the Boston Bar Association on HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (“CNI”). Dan, along with Gail Epp of EJP Consulting Group, LLC, presented on how CNI is achieving its policy goals, how it compares to HOPE VI and how housing transactions involving Choice Initiatives are typically structured and approved.
